Furnaces have come a long way since their conception, and today, they’re more effective and efficient than ever. Home heating has had a long history, and its evolution has changed the way that we build our homes and live our lives.

Furnaces Before Electricity

Creating warmth has always been key to our survival, and for most the St Cloud winter months are cold enough that it was always a necessity. Building fires was the first way that humans survived during cold periods, and it’s still the number one method used to heat our homes.

Fireplaces were very common in homes for most of modern history, and it wasn’t long ago that they were the primary way to heat a home. However, because most of the heat escapes through the chimney, they’ve never been a very effective form of heating, and carbon monoxide poisoning was always a concern. If your St Cloud, Minnesota home has a fireplace today, chances are that it’s mostly used as a novelty item.

Coal and Oil

As soon as coal began to become easy to obtain, the coal furnace started to become popular in homes. Many homes started to be built with a coal cellar, which was a small concrete block room that had a metal door used as a coal chute on the outside. Coal chutes are still a part of many older homes in Minnesota, although they’re commonly painted over and sealed shut.

As more homes began to be built wired with electricity, oil furnaces started to become more popular. Oil furnaces required an electric pump to aerosolize the fuel to be burned and to power a fan that carried the warmed air through ducts to floor and wall registers.

Natural Gas and Propane Furnaces

Modern furnaces are much more efficient than coal and oil furnaces of the past. Today, furnaces are able to burn natural gas with around 98% fuel efficiency. Because of their lower cost of operation, natural gas furnaces quickly became the most dominant on the market. Electric furnaces are still used in some regions, but in colder places like Minnesota, it typically costs less to use natural gas than electricity.
