Signs It May Be Time for a New Shower

Not every plumbing issue calls for a full replacement, but some signs point clearly toward one. Cracks in the shower base, pan, or surround are a serious indicator. Water that gets behind walls can lead to mold growth and structural damage that costs far more to fix later. Persistent low water pressure at the shower head is worth investigating. It can point to a failing valve, mineral buildup from hard water, or supply line problems. Central Minnesota’s hard water accelerates mineral accumulation on fixtures and valves, shortening their service life. A constant drip or squealing sound when the shower runs typically means worn internal valve components that may no longer be repairable if parts have been discontinued.

Cosmetic deterioration, faded finishes, chipping surfaces, or corroded hardware doesn’t always require replacement on its own. But when it coincides with functional problems or an aging pan, a new installation is often the better investment than repeated repairs.

St. Cloud Permit Requirements for Shower Installation

The City of St. Cloud requires a plumbing permit for any shower installation, alteration, or replacement. Skipping this step can create complications with your homeowner’s insurance and cause problems when you sell the property.

There’s an additional requirement for tiled showers that’s been in effect since August 1, 2022. Under the 2020 Minnesota Plumbing Code, Section 408.7, tiled shower installations must include a flood test record submitted to the Building Safety Department before the final plumbing inspection. The flood test is used to verify that the installation holds water without leaking through the tile bed. It must be performed by the installer, witnessed by a third party, and signed by both before submission.

Only a plumber licensed with the City of St. Cloud (or the owner-occupant of a single-family dwelling used solely as a personal residence) can pull a plumbing permit. Permits also become invalid if work doesn’t begin within 180 days of issuance.
