We all feel it in the air and see it on the trees. As the green fades from the foliage and gives way to red and gold many of us are beginning to prepare for the cold and there are several things we can do to make winter more manageable both in terms of furnace costs and comfort.

At Neighborhood Heating our experienced and professional technicians want to help you prepare. Taking a proactive approach to your reducing your home heating costs assures you safety, savings and comfort during the really cold winter months. Here’s a few things you can do on your own.

1. Seal Your Windows

Many of us are aware of the benefits of sealing our windows for the winter; this can prevent a great deal of heat from escaping from older window frames. The ideal solution would be to replace the failing seals or the frame entirely however this can be an extremely costly endeavor which makes window insulation kits a more effective and affordable alternative. Oftentimes heat mostly escapes from the frames around the window and not the actual window itself so be sure to inspect and seal that as well.

2. Insulate Your Basement and Attic

Your basement and attic space are two other areas that should be given careful examination and some leaks can easily be sealed with insulation to help improve overall efficiency in the home.

3. Get Your Furnace Cleaned

It’s no secret that we usually don’t keep our Furnace as clean as our kitchen counter tops but many of us fail to consider the importance of keeping your Furnace clean especially during the winter months. Getting a Furnace Cleaning and replacing your air filter regularly not only ensures efficiency, improves its longevity and reduces your Heating Costs it also improves the air quality within the home which is very important especially when your windows are closed for several months.

4. Get a Programmable Thermostat Installed and Set-up

A Programmable Thermostat and a well-planned heating schedule can greatly reduce your Heating Costs over the long winter months. Many of us are aware that we can save money by turning down our thermostats when we’re not home but this isn’t always convenient.

Installing a Programmable Thermostat allows you to tailor your heating schedule to your needs. Your thermostat can be programmed to reach your desired temperature prior to your anticipated arrival as opposed to turning the thermostat back up when you get home. A programmable thermostat and a well-planned heating schedule can greatly reduce your heating costs over the long winter months.

5. Get Your Furnace Tuned-up & Maintained

Getting a Furnace Tune-up and having it Maintained is not only crucial to efficiency but also safety. Faulty connections involving flammables and combustibles such as oil and gas present deadly fire hazards to your home and may affect air quality and health conditions within the home as well.
