Should I Repair or Replace My Cooling System?

When summer heat creeps in and your AC starts acting up, it’s natural to wonder if a quick fix will do—or if it’s time for a full replacement. You might be asking: Should I repair or replace my cooling system?

If your cooling system is over 10–15 years old, requires frequent or expensive repairs, or struggles to maintain comfort, replacing it may be more cost-effective than continued repairs.

With decades of HVAC experience, I’ve helped homeowners weigh this exact decision based on real performance and long-term savings. Let’s explore how to evaluate your system’s condition and make the best choice for comfort and efficiency.

Here at Neighborhood have some tips to help you decide whether to repair your home cooling system this summer.

First, answer this question: How old is your air conditioner? If you don’t know off the top of your head, check for a date on the manufacturer’s nameplate.

Anywhere between 15 and 20 years old is “replacement” territory, as air conditioners simply aren’t built to last any longer than a couple of decades. At around the 10-year mark, you’re likely to see a loss in operating efficiency, which contributes to wear and tear and climbing energy bills. Additionally, older units that use R22 refrigerant — which has been phased out — will be increasingly difficult and expensive to repair. Looking at a more modern, energy-efficient model is a good idea at that point, no matter how your system is performing. That said, the age of the unit becomes an even bigger issue if it isn’t keeping your living space comfortable. There’s no point in continuing to run an air conditioner that doesn’t sufficiently cool your home, or if whipping it into shape is going to be extremely expensive.

That brings us to our next important question: How much will repairs cost? You’ll need a professional to inspect your unit and give you an estimate on repairs. Then, use what we call the “5,000 Rule,” and multiply the age of your unit by the projected cost of repairs. Do you come up with a total of $5,000 or more? It’s time to shop for a new air conditioner.

Needing to replace your cooling system is not a bad thing. Far from it! You’ll enjoy greater comfort, better air quality, and lower energy bills for years to come. If you’re ready to start shopping, here are a few key considerations to keep in mind before making the purchase.
