Our History
In the 1940s, Ray Sherk, a 40-year-old manager of a local feed mill, found that the rural farmers of the area wanted indoor plumbing. They had grown tired of the outhouses and hand pumps of outdoor plumbing, and because there were no plumbers in town, Ray helped the local farmers get plumbing into their homes.
By 1947, the demand grew so high that he decided to open his own plumbing shop. This is how Neighborhood was born. Ray started offering furnace service shortly thereafter, and in those days, furnaces were the size of a VW Bug! Water and drain pipes were cast iron, all pipes were threaded by hand, and all drilling was also done by hand! Cast iron radiators took at least two men to lift, and the average one-bathroom house could take at least one month to complete!
In 1960, Ray’s son, Jerry, took over the family business — carrying the knowledge forth that his father gave to him. Jerry would then share and expand that knowledge with his two sons, William and Scott.
William then took over the business in 1991 with Scott and his brother-in-law, Gary, by his side. Today, the 4th Generation has stepped up with William’s daughter, Kelly, and Scott’s son, Alex, ushering the family business forward.
While the shape of the plumbing, HVAC, and electrical business is vastly different than what it was in the first days of the company in 1947, the same hard-working attitudes and professional expertise that the company was founded on remains core to every single job that Neighborhood is called upon to perform.
